The Best Metier d’Arts Designer Watches for 2018
Metier d’arts has long been part of fine watchmaking, with new limited edition timepieces introduced by the leading luxury watch brands each year. Designer watches of this type are distinguished by their amazing decorative dials created with the use of hand engraving, marquetry, enameling, and other artistic techniques. In one of our previous blog posts, we wrote about some of the best metier d’arts designer watches created by Cartier, but this time, we want to highlight several models introduced by other renowned brands this year. Enjoy!
Vacheron Constantin Metiers d’Art Les Aerostiers
This year, Vacheron Constantin has introduced a whole new series of 18k white gold designer watches, released under the name Metiers d’Art Les Aerostiers. Inspired by the early history of hot air ballooning, it represents a set of five luxury watch models in different colors, each distinguished by a unique dial with the depiction of the air balloon, made using plique-a-jour enameling and relief engraving.
Piaget Altiplano Malachite Marquetry Tourbillon
Combining the most exacting and rarest artistic crafts with fine watchmaking, the Altiplano Malachite Marquetry Tourbillon by Piaget is another perfect example of metier d’arts designer watches presented this year. The novelty comes in an 18k rose gold case and features a stunning dial crafted from malachite marquetry by Herve Obligi, a talented sculptor and one of the last specialists of hard stone marquetry in Europe.
Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Smalta Clara Tiger
Available in 18k white gold and 18k rose gold, the Petite Heure Minute Smalta Clara Tiger is one of the latest designer watches created by Jaquet Droz. This beautiful model is distinguished by its gold plique-a-jour Grand Feu enamel dial with a white mother-of-pearl sub-dial for hours and minutes. Besides, it is decorated with 100 diamonds weighing 0.89 carats.
Chopard L.U.C XP Esprit de Fleurier Peony
It is impossible not to include on this list the Chopard L.U.C XP Esprit de Fleurier Peony, an elegant and refine 18k rose gold watch with a Grand Feu enamel dial depicting a fragile peony flower created using a traditional Swiss method of cutting paper. Moreover, it is equipped with an in-house automatic movement hand-engraved with the Fleurisanne technique, not to mention its diamond-set case and lugs.
There are certainly many other metier d’arts designer watches introduced by the world’s leading manufacturers this year. However, these four are indeed unique, and they definitely stand out from the crowd!
