IWC Portofino Hand-Wound Watches with Moon Phases
IWC boasts a whole range of high-end watches, but the Portofino occupies a special place. This elegant collection appeared in 1984 when the company introduced the Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase (Ref. 5251) created on the basis of a 19th-century moon phase pocket watch Lepine. This year, as a tribute to the original luxury watch, IWC has released two new Hand-Wound Moon Phase models, which are the first Portofino watches with moon phases powered by an 8-day hand-winding movement.
The new Portofino watches with moon phases are available in two versions: in polished stainless steel (Ref. IW516401) and in polished 18k rose gold (Ref. IW516403). Each model features a 45mm case, the thickness of which is 13.5mm. Its water resistance is up to the depth of 30 meters. Besides, the new Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase comes with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal case back and very distinctive lugs inspired by the original model from the 1980s.
The stainless steel model features a silver-plated dial, while the 18k rose gold model has a radiant sunburst slate-gray dial. Both variations are designed in an elegant and laconic minimalist style with applied gold-plated hands and hour markers. A small hacking seconds sub-dial is traditionally placed at the 6 o’clock position. However, the most notable part of the dial is undoubtedly its moon phase display placed at 12 o’clock. It is worth noting that the IWC moon phase indicators are always extremely precise and diverge by only 1 day in 577.5 years from the actual state of the moon, not to mention that they represent true masterpieces of the watchmaking art.
In addition, the new Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase features a power reserve indicator located at the 9 o’clock position and a small date aperture at 3 o’clock. The dial is covered by a sapphire glass with anti-reflective coating.
Each of the IWC Portofino watches with moon phases is equipped with an in-house hand-winding movement Caliber 59800 built on 30 jewels and decorated with perlage and Cotes de Geneve. It operates at the frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4.0 Hz) and provides 192 hours of power reserve.
Both models are presented on a Santoni hand-made dark brown alligator leather strap distinguished by a wonderful gradation of colors and a very special patina, which are the hallmarks of all leather goods produced by Santoni.
Just like the original model, the new Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase with its elegant classic design is one of those wrist watches that can easily be called timeless. You can wear it to office and when going out at night, not to mention that it can be passed down from father to son. Besides, it is exactly a timepiece that can make a personal style statement.
