The King's Word

IWC Portofino Hand-Wound Watches with Moon Phases

IWC boasts a whole range of high-end watches, but the Portofino occupies a special place. This elegant collection appeared in 1984 when the company introduced the Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase (Ref. 5251) created on the basis of a 19th-century moon phase pocket watch Lepine. This year, as a tribute to the original luxury watch, IWC has released two new Hand-Wound Moon Phase models, which are the first Portofino watches with moon phases powered by an 8-day hand-winding movement.

IWC Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase Ref. 5251, 1984

The new Portofino watches with moon phases are available in two versions: in polished stainless steel (Ref. IW516401) and in polished 18k rose gold (Ref. IW516403). Each model features a 45mm case, the thickness of which is 13.5mm. Its water resistance is up to the depth of 30 meters. Besides, the new Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase comes with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal case back and very distinctive lugs inspired by the original model from the 1980s.

The stainless steel model features a silver-plated dial, while the 18k rose gold model has a radiant sunburst slate-gray dial. Both variations are designed in an elegant and laconic minimalist style with applied gold-plated hands and hour markers. A small hacking seconds sub-dial is traditionally placed at the 6 o’clock position. However, the most notable part of the dial is undoubtedly its moon phase display placed at 12 o’clock. It is worth noting that the IWC moon phase indicators are always extremely precise and diverge by only 1 day in 577.5 years from the actual state of the moon, not to mention that they represent true masterpieces of the watchmaking art.

In addition, the new Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase features a power reserve indicator located at the 9 o’clock position and a small date aperture at 3 o’clock. The dial is covered by a sapphire glass with anti-reflective coating.

Each of the IWC Portofino watches with moon phases is equipped with an in-house hand-winding movement Caliber 59800 built on 30 jewels and decorated with perlage and Cotes de Geneve. It operates at the frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4.0 Hz) and provides 192 hours of power reserve.

Both models are presented on a Santoni hand-made dark brown alligator leather strap distinguished by a wonderful gradation of colors and a very special patina, which are the hallmarks of all leather goods produced by Santoni.

Just like the original model, the new Portofino Hand-Wound Moon Phase with its elegant classic design is one of those wrist watches that can easily be called timeless. You can wear it to office and when going out at night, not to mention that it can be passed down from father to son. Besides, it is exactly a timepiece that can make a personal style statement. Thereby, if one day you want to sell any of these Portofino watches with moon phases, just let us know about that. At King Watch Buyers, we are always ready to buy authentic IWC watches for cash!

Why You Should Love Rolex Old Vintage Watches

When it comes to new watches, individual tastes may vary. Some love cutting-edge Hublot. Others prefer stylish Franck Muller. However, when it comes to old vintage watches, you will hardly find a connoisseur of Haute Horlogerie who does not love or, at least, respect Rolex timepieces. After all, they are the most recognizable high-end watches with a long history in fine watchmaking. Moreover, Rolex has a dedicated army of fans throughout the world, and for a reason. In fact, there are no less than five reasons for such an obsession with Rolex old vintage watches.

1. Rolex old watches are tough.

Not that Rolex new watches lack reliability or robustness, but old watches manufactured by this renowned company are truly exceptional. Let’s just remember the first Rolex Explorer worn by Sir Edmund Hillary to the peak of Mount Everest in 1953. This tough timepiece withstood all the harsh conditions. Moreover, it still works. You can see it for yourself at the Beyer Clock and Watch Museum in Zurich.

2. Rolex vintage watches increase in value over time.

The truth is Rolex watches grow in value much faster than many other vintage timepieces. In particular, this applies to early models of the Explorer, Daytona, and Submariner. Thus, Rolex old vintage watches make a good investment, especially when it comes to timepieces that are still in good working condition. After all, who does not want to have a wearable piece of watchmaking history?

3. Rolex old watches look great with modern accessories.

Another important thing about Rolex vintage watches is that they look cool with modern accessories. For example, if you replace the old band with a modern NATO or genuine leather strap, you will get an entirely new Rolex with a vintage edge. In general, Rolex timepieces are very versatile, which allows changing their style whenever you want.

4. Rolex little details make a big difference.

Among a variety of Rolex old vintage watches, there are true gems that are always in demand by collectors. It’s all about details. The fact is that some Rolex old models are distinguished by absolutely stunning and rare features that make them unique. For instance, these may include a so-called “Bart Simpson” dial with its odd-shaped coronet resembling the Bart Simpson’s head, a dial with the Rolex “exclamation mark” at 6 o’clock, or an “underline” dial. Each of these little details can greatly increase the value of the timepiece.

5. Rolex old watches were created as useful tools.

The Milgauss was made for people working in nuclear research labs. The Submariner was created specifically for divers. The GMT-Master was designed for pilots. In fact, every Rolex model was created with a certain purpose, which makes all of them highly useful tools with many practical applications.
